Washington,(BGM NEWS) :- Official portraits of former president Barak Obama and first lady Michelle, were unveiled during a glittering ceremony at the National Portrait Gallery here this morning.

The paintings which will be hung inside the gallery, have long been awaited since the Obamas left the White House more than a year ago. Those in the audience, including former vice president Joe Biden and others who worked in the Obama White House, cheered as the portraits were unveiled.

It marked the first time that two black artists were commissioned to paint official portraits of the first couple. New York based Kehinde Wiley was given the task to do the portrait of the former president, while painting of the former first lady was undertaken by Amy Sherald a Baltimore artist.

The Obamas were full of praise for the work  of their respective artists. The national Portrait Gallery is home to about 1,600 pieces of art work
