LOS ANGELES (BGM NEWS) — Spike Lee, the legendary New York film director finally won an Oscar. It came during the 91st staging of the glitzy red carpet Academy Awards here Sunday.
It also came on a night when Lee’s beloved Knicks basketball team snapped an 18 run losing streak at Madison Square Garden.
The Knicks beat the spurs 130 – 118 in a thrilling game at the Garden. For Lee, the long-awaited Oscar win was a welcome relief. An obviously overjoyed Lee ran into the arms of announcer Samuel H. Jackson as he got on stage to accept his Award.
After years of disappointment, Lee took home the prize for Best Adapted Screenplay for “BlacKKKlansman.” Spike Lee would later expressed his disappointment when his film failed to land one of the night’s top prizes. He was notable upset when Green Book took the prize for Best Picture of the year. The movie based on a true story has generated controversy since its release.
Lee also lost out on the Best Director honors, which went to Alfonso Cuaron for Romo also a true story about the director’s childhood with a nanny in Mexico.
