JAMAICAN PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES GENERAL ELECTION FOR FEBY.25
KINGSTON,JAMAICA :- Buoyed by opinion polls which show it taking the lead over the opposition, the ruling Peoples National Party led by prime minister Portia Simpson -Miller, has announced general elections for this Caribbean Island on February 25.
The election will be held 8 months before they are constitutionally due under Jamaica’s electoral system which does not have a fixed date.The governing party currently holds 42 of the 63 seats in parliament, while the opposition Jamaica Labour Party holds the remaining 21.
Despite the polls, the opposition is expressing confidence that it will be victorious. The recent poll came as a surprise to many here, as the ruling party has been faced with some internal strive
mainly over candidate selection
The opposition had also faced a similar situation.The sate of the economy and the need for a reduction in the unemployment rate has emerged as the most single issue among voters. More than 1.8 million votes are eligible to vote but many are undecided. The most recent pool give the ruling party 27.5 percent with the opposition at 23.2 percent.
