Monday April 18, 2017 : Violet Mosses Brown became the oldest living person in the world, following the death on Saturday, of Italian Emma Moreno. Brown of Duanvale in the north west parish of Trelawny is 117 years and 36 days old. She was born on March 10, 1900.
Moreno who previously held the record was born on November 29, 1899 and was the last known person on Earth to be born in the 19th century. Brown meanwhile was born while Jamaica was still a colony under British rule with Queen Victoria as head of the Monarchy.
Queen Elizabeth who currently occupies that position, recognized Brown in a letter honoring her on reaching 115 years in 2015.In an interview with the Gleaner Newspaper in 2010. Aunt V, as she is popularly called, said “hard work and god food,” was responsible for her longevity.
On Sunday she told the other Jamaican Daily — The Observer – that she was “happy to be the oldest person alive.” The oldest person believed to have lived was Jeanne Calment who died at age 122 in 1997.
