In an emphatic display, Justify the Bob Baffert trained colt won the 150th Belmont Stakes race here Saturday and in the process became only the 13 horse to win the triple crown in the history of horse racing.
Justify had previously won the Kentucky Derby and The Preakness in impressive fashion earlier this year, and was the odds on favorite at 4-5 here.Ridden by veteran jockey Mike Smith, Justify was out of the gates in a flash, and led the entire filed from start to finish
For jockey Smith, Saturday’s victory was also historic. It marked his first triple crown win in an illustrious career spanning more than two decades. At 52 Smith also became the oldest jockey to win the triple crown.
Saturday’s win was the second for trainer Baffert. He won the 2015 triple crown with American Pharaoh, the first horse to do so in 37 years at the time. This year’s running of The Belmont Stakes attracted a crowd of 90,000 fans.
