Twenty one year old University student Betty Cantrell was on Sunday crowned Miss America 2016 at a glittering ceremony inside the Broad Walk Hall Arena in Atlantic City New Jersey.

Cantrell won ahead of Miss. Mississippi, Miss. Colorado, Miss Louisiana, and Miss Alabama respectively as well as 45 other contestants. But the night’s highlight was the appearance and performance of Vanessa Williams.

Williams, the first black Miss America who won the title 32 years ago,was
forced to resign 10 months later after nude photos of her, which were taken
before her win,surfaced.

On Sunday Miss America organization apologized to Williams.”On behalf of
today’s organization,I want to apologize to you and your mother Helen Williams,”
Sam Haskell,CEO of the pageant told Williams. He also told her ,”I want to apologize for anything that was said or done that made you feel any less than the Miss America you are,and the Miss America you always will be.” “I did the best I could. On behalf of my family especially my mother in particular I am honored to be back,” Williams responded.
