HAVANA CUBA:- SUN. MARCH 20, 2016:-
United States (US) president Obama arrived here today, creating history as the first sitting US president to visit the communist Island in almost 90 — years. The president — accompanied by first lady Michelle and their daughters — arrived in pouring rain and was met by Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriquez instead of Cuban president Rauel Castro. Officials on both sides were quick to down play Castro’s absence, noting that both Obama and the Cuban leader had previously met on other occasions. The official welcome for president Obama was planned for Monday at the Presidential Palace here.
Obama will also hold talks with officials of the Cuban regime as well as dissidents and members of Cuba’s civil society. He is expected to address human rights issues, Press Freedom and the need for the Cuban regime to be more open with its citizens.
Critics have accused Obama of propping up a Dictator by visiting Cuba, but US officials argue that they hope the president’s visit will urge the Cuban Government to be more open and begin to take steps towards economic reforms that will benefit the Cuban people.
