German chancellor Angela Merkel announced on Monday, that her country is to
construct houses and provide other assistance for thousands of refugees pouring into
Europe from war torn Syria and other middle east countries. She made the announcement while also urging European and other countries to “do more to assist with the crisis. Germany is on course to accept as much as 80,000 refugees by the end of this year, and France announced that it will accept 24,000 of those fleeing their homeland. The German leader acknowledge that the resettlement of the refugees “will change
this country’s landscape forever.”
In Britain meanwhile, prime minister David Cameron announced that his country is to accept about 20,000 of the refugees who have streamed into several European countries
over the last several days. The United States in contrast has been criticized for what some see as the poor response to the refugee crisis. Australia which has already taken in some refugees, was also under pressure to do more.
The US has taken in fewer that 5,000 refugees since the crisis started and has given no
indication about its next move. The country has not said how many of those fleeing their countries it will eventually accept.
