Washington, Tuesday, February 7, 2017:-
History was created in the US senate today, when vice president Mike Pence was forced to break a tie in the vote to confirm Betty De Vos as president Trump’s education secretary.
His action became necessary after two Republican Senators joined 48 Democrats in opposing the nomination. This led to a 50 – 50 tie which under senate rules require the vice president to cast the deciding vote, which has never happened before.
De Vos, who has been a big financial contributor to Republican causes has faced opposition over her inexperience of education issues. Her opposition has come from educators especially Teachers Union from across the country, as well as several law makers from both sides of the political divide. She is also a supporter of school choice.
